The Faculty for Fisheries & Marine Science |
Before meeting the Faculty Dean Prof. Indra Jaya for the 1st time, I visit Hefni in his department - in fact, Hefni picked me up from home and introduced me to Pak Indra Jaya. |
A nice view on a pond from Hefni's office. |
This is the entrance to my future work place. |
Meeting Prof. Indra Jaya; after Hefni and I had a pleasant, friendly discussion with him, I met many other people from the institute. Too many to remember all the names on the first day. I hope I'll manage over time! |

A few impressions from the way back to Bogor. Hefni takes a road through the countryside and villages to avoid the routine traffic jam. |
New achievements at home (Oct 3)
Almost feeling at home: Schneckennudel production in a tropical kitchen. |
Our new car: Prof. Indra borrows the institute vehicle to us until we can buy our own mobil (guess who made this possible again? The photo might help you to find out) |
The two drivers critically inspecting our new car. On the right: Pak Ate, Hefni's driver and a very nice guy (he drove us around a lot before we had our own car&driver and taught us Bahasa Indonesia at the same time); on the left: our new driver, Pak Erwin |
Almost twins: My always helpful Indonesian brother Hefni and I |
Before we can actually use our new car, we have to get safety belts installed (Bogor traffic does not allow to take any risks) |
This is how car repair shops look like in Bogor |
And then we have to change a tire. Erwin stops at the street to inflate the spare tire and to change it. |

Evening of Oct 3, 2013: Reception at the German Embassy in Jakarta
"To celebrate the Day of German Unity The Ambassador of rge Federal republic of Germany requested the pleasure of our company" (unfortunately only I (Carsten) could go, because we have had no babysitter then)
The 'Brandenburger Tor' made of ice. Impressive but quickly thawing... |
An Indonesian pop star singing both the Indonesian and the German national anthems with a lot of enthusiasm |
Former Indonesian President and founder of democracy in Indonesia, Prof. Jusuf Habibie giving a speech; the German embassador stands in the back (sorry, I only had my weak cell phone camera with me) |
...and lots of German food, wine and cocktails (quite unusual for Indonesia) |
The Taman Kencana Community
The photos of last Fridays (Oct 4) school presentation event give us a good opportunity to introduce a few of our new friends to you. Most of them live in Taman Kencana, the area around ISB that we have also settled in. This way, they all live in walking distance, making it very easy for the kids (and parents) to visit each other.
Each Friday the kids present what they did at school over the week - and they are very good ans self-confident at this.
. |
This is Mireille and her son Milo (left) and her daughter Maya (front). Mireille gave us a lot of important advice and helped us getting settled in Taman Kencana. Moreover, she is the one to make sure that we are invited to all BBQs and gatherings. |
The ladies in the back are Katinka (another German in Taman Kencana) and Miss Trish (Robin's class teacher; on the right); blonde kids in the front: Barret and Jovee |
...as you can see, dancing and singing is important here. |
This is one of Ari's teachers, Miss Adinda. |
The lady on the right is called Iir - she is going to be our Bahasa Indonesia teacher (i.e. for Nadine and me), as soon as we can find time for this.On the left: Amy. |
This is Lisa. She leads the parents' representation at ISB and organizes many events. |
Pak Tio (in front) helped us a lot before we came to Bogor (e.g. organizing the house we are temporarily living in and still is a point of contact for our questions. He works in the ISB administration. |
Well, and in the midst of all these people, our two sons (here, only Ari is shown, since on this particular Friday his class was in the center of the performance) |
...dancing |
...and making (loud) music (together with Zo). |
The smiling guy on the right is Max (son of Iir) |
The blonde girl is called Chloe. |
In the back is Miss Miriam, Ari's teacher. |
Oct 4, 2013: Our new new house
On Friday, Oct 4 we decide to move into a different house and to rent it for the next two years (in Indonesia you pay the rent for a house 1-3 years in advance; with rental prices similar to Germany, deciding to rent a house is quite a significant decision). We were lucky to be able to sublease a house from ISB for our initial weeks in Bogor and will move into the new house in the beginning of November.

So far, only two outside impressions. More photos to come. |
